So there I was in the living room on Wednesday night, typing away furiously with my assignment, when I heard a muffled cry from kg's room.
"Er... dave? I'm stuck."
It was Esther. As kg was out, she had decided to watch recorded sessions of Oprah on kg's computer. But just as she finished, what she had not counted on was that kg's door would all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, stuff up. Apparently some kind of ring on the handle that's supposed to connect it to the lock on the side of the door broke. Hence, when the handle's turned, the lock doesn't.
So I tried to fix it, of course. I mean, you have to understand. Being trapped is really inconvenient. But being trapped in kg's room takes it to a whole new level. I started by taking the handle apart.
The broken ring
While that was amusing, it unfortunately didn't work. All we got was a hole in a door that wouldn't budge.

As all (actually, just one) bright ideas were just about going down the drain, in what appeared to be a dramatic entrance, kg got home to save the day. Claiming that he has had to break into rooms before in a certain apartment building I shall not mention but happens to be along Swanston Street and sounds like the word 'narrow' but without the letter 'n' in it, he seemed to be experienced in such matters.
So we tried first with a card. Apparently what we see when thieves use cards to swipe through the sides of doors in those cheap movies are actually possible. When we do that, we can actually force the lock back into the door and hence open it. Theoretically, of course. The card didn't work. It was too big. We needed something smaller. Something thinner.
We then used a small screwdriver, the kind you'd use for your spectacles. As it was impossible to do it from the outside, we had to pass it to Esther through the hole and had her do it herself. And voila! She was free!

The door is still left at this state to this day. Kg's convinced that he can fix it himself, but we'll have to wait till after his exams to see that happen. So till then, he can't really close his room door, and that really sucks. I won't say why. So what he's done is cut up one of his old cards and stuck it at the side of his door. This way, there won't be a hole for the lock to uh... lock into?

So what's the moral of the story, my friends?
Well... nothing really. Just thought it was an amusing story to share.
Till next time.
p/s: kg. if you're reading this, i'm just kidding about your room. there's nothing wrong with your room. it is definitely not a mess at all. serious!
